What is social emotional development and why is it important?

Emotions  impact our attention, memory, and learning; our ability to form relationships; and our physical and mental health. as emotions also have a direct influence on our behaviors, actions, and interactions with others it is critical for us to learn how to label, identify, and manage them early in life for they strongly influence our relationships with others and our overall quality of life.

Supporting the social and emotional health of preschoolers is important because:

  • Learning to read involves regulating emotions

  • Activity  requires the child to sit and attend to a task and follow instructions that requires self management.

  • Learning to communicate involves using socially appropriate strategies for interaction that requires social and emotional awareness.

  • Being successful in school involves understanding classroom expectations and participating in large- and small-group activities with peers.

  • Early healthy relationships plays an important role in  brain development

  • Learning self-help skills involves following directions, controlling emotions to complete challenging tasks, and knowing when and how to ask for help.

  • Poor social, emotional, and behavioral development is related to  school failure

  • Supporting children early in life will allow them to give back to society later

Children begin to develop their social-emotional skills at birth. Research of brain and neuroscience indicates that children are born ready to connect. When a child’s emotional and physical needs are met, learning pathways to the brain are formed, which lead to learning in all developmental domains.

What are the five components of social emotional development?

1.Self-awareness

This is the ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions, thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence and optimism.

Examples that demonstrate self awareness, telling a teacher, “I am sad mad or upset because I do not want to share"

2.Self-mangment

This is the ability to control one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving  goals. Example that demonstrate self management is when preschoolers are able to wait their turn, follow instructions and routines.

3.Social-awarness

This is the ability to take other perspectives and empathize with them, to understand social norms for behavior, and to recognize family, school and community resources and supports. Examples that demonstrate social awareness when preschoolers express sympathy for a friend who is feeling sad, help another child , or offer support.

4.Relationship skills

This is the ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. This includes clear communication, active listening, cooperation, avoiding social pressure, conflict resolution, and obtaining or providing help when needed. Preschoolers demonstrate developing relationship skills by asking the teacher of a friend for help, or when they express what they want or feel to others.

5.Responsinle decision making

This is the ability to make constructive and respectful choices about personal behavior and social interactions. This includes consideration of ethical standards, safety concerns, social norms, the realistic evaluation of consequences of various actions, and the well-being of self and others.

Preschoolers demonstrate responsible decision making when they wait until another child is done playing with a toy that he is excited about, of when they  offers to share the toys with another person although he is exited about playing with it.
